THE SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

At the baptism, we read: “And just as [Jesus] was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased’ ” (Mark 1:10–11). An experience of God so profound that it lead him into the wasteland alone to explore what the meaning was. And so his ministry begins.

Today we read “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him” (Mark 9:7). Jesus has just prophesied his suffering and death. At this critical moment, he has another profound experience of God, this time he is not alone in the experience. Each receives what they need: Jesus renewed solace for the journey ahead; Peter, James, and John, the context for what is to come.

As we make our own pilgrim journey in the world we often need to seek both solace and spiritual context from Jesus. Today's feast reminds us that God remains ever ready to lavishly supply both to us whenever we call on Him.

A Prayer...

You were transfigured on the Mountain, O Christ God,showing Your Disciples as much of Your glory as they could hold.Let Your eternal light shine also upon us sinners, through the prayers of the Mother of God, O Giver of Light, glory to You.
