THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
Happy Easter!
The Good Shepherd
At the Catacomb of Priscilla, Rome-3rd Century
"I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd." John 10:16.
What did John mean by this? It seems out of place. The gospel is about the good shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep, because he loves the sheep and is not just a hireling who has no attachment to the sheep.
As one scholar writes: "[The] expectation [was] that the 12 tribes of Israel will be gathered together from their scattered state and re-united. But the thought is now expressed in a fresh way: [all] the children of God. [jew or pagan] gathered together by Jesus takes the place of Israel, God's chosen people, and they are formed into God's one flock through the one shepherd, Jesus. The new community of God [...] will grow, while remaining undivided, into something big, a single community in which the 'other sheep' will not merely be tolerated as late arrivals. Their unity is a gift and a promise [...]."
This seems to imply that unity among believers must be our constant goal. Not just reunification of our separated Christian churches, but unity among members as well. We must do all we can in our own day to recapture the praise once lauded upon followers of Jesus by non-christians: "See how they love one another!"

Please consider contributing to the Annual Appeal this year. The ministries and services it supports need our assistance more than ever.
I thank you, Lord, for all the sins which I have not done, because you restrained me.I thank you for the sorrow I have felt for all the sins I have done.I thank you for all the people I have met, both friends and enemies. And I pray for them all, that they may all be your friends.
